Division is a continuation of Bell, which you can read here.

"Who are you, anyways?" Susie asks into the phone.

"The Operator." the phone replies.

"Ralsei, how do you know this guy's number?" Susie asks.

"Well, it's '4-1-1' for Operator assistance, usually." he replies.

"...Isn't that only on really old phones?"

"Yeah, but.. there haven't been that many networking upgrades in the dark world... We usually just cross the street and talk to our friends."

"Fair enough." Susie responds.

"So, what are we doing in here?" Susie asks the Operator.

"I really don't have any idea what you're talking about." the man on the other end says. "I'm... just an operator."

"Yeah? How come you knew who Ralsei was?"

"He calls me every other week. I swear he's the only reason I still work here."

Ralsei takes the phone.

"I'll call you back, I'm going to try something..." Ralsei says, hanging up.

"What the hell are you doing?" Susie says as Ralsei strikes 3 buttons on the touch tone dial pad.

"Calling 9-1-1. That's for emergencies, right?" Ralsei says, with a smile.

"Oh, I guess this is an emergency." Susie says. The machine spits out a pair of quarters as Ralsei presses the phone to his fluffy cheek.

"Hi!" Ralsei says into it immediately.

He subsequently hears a SIT* tone, a spark, and a bang. The machine spits out a pile of quarters onto the floor and the handset begins rapidly heating up. Ralsei tosses it towards the phone and it dangles by the cable.

"WHAT DID YOU DO!?" Susie yells.

"I HAVE NO IDEA!" Ralsei shouts, in complete panic.

The phone starts to deform slowly as its temperature rises.

"Aren't plastic fumes, like, really bad for you?" Susie asks, slowly backing away from the phone.

She backs into the wall on the other side of the room, almost tripping over Kris. The wall shifts a slight bit and the wallpaper tears. She notices a large vent cover and takes it off.

"So... guys?" she says. Ralsei darts over and the phone on the other side of the room catches fire.

The Lightners climb in and begin squirming away from the blazing telephone.

"How does that even happen?" Susie asks.

"I have no idea! It just... overheated?" Ralsei says.

"...speaker..." Kris mutters.

"Huh?" the other two say in unison.

"Speaker." Kris mumbles.

"Well, yeah, but... why?" Ralsei asks.

"Eh." Kris shrugs before crawling through the cramped metal shaft some more.

Susie kicks out a panel and drops into a cold, dark room covered in smooth stone tiles.

"Hey, guys! Check this out!" she yells, grabbing Ralsei and yanking him in.

"Dude, we should find some boxes and like snacks and build a fort in here. That would be sick." Susie says, clearly excited by the possibilities of a large, dark, smelly room.

"Wait... nah, I gotta get home. WAIT, I SAID I'D CALL TORIEL BACK." Susie says, sticking her arms to her head.

"It's fine! I'm sure she'll understand that the phone exploded!" Ralsei says.

The three begin walking through the room and notice a thin rectangular light on the other side. They approach it and it turns out to be the bulletproof window on an office door.

Ralsei reaches for the knob, but Ralsei slaps his hand out of the way and opens the door herself.

The room has a large green light and is lined with racks of telephone equipment. "Oh, shit, this is the thing that beeps at you when you leave it off the hook!!" Susie shouts, pointing at a box which is actively making that sound.

Susie kicks it and shouts "SHUT UP!" before walking to the end of the room and pushing open another door.

On the other side is a hallway, full of rooms with the old Bell system logo on their nameplates. As the three walk through the hallway, they follow a series of green exit signs.

They finally come to a pair of double doors with an almost blinding light on the other side. Susie and Ralsei shove the doors open and Kris steps ahead of both of them. The two others follow behind them and look around.

They stand in an empty parking lot, a beige-brick building with lots of windows that's two stories tall and shaped like a lowercase 't'.

Beside the parking space is a one-way street. There is a sidewalk, but only on the other side of the road.

The three begin crossing the street, Susie holding Kris' hand. She lets go once they're on the other side.

They survey the road and notice that it ends in a tunnel on both sides. They stand beside an enormous, steep hill.

Kris begins mumbling to them. "Susie, climb. Ralsei, check that one." they say, pointing at a tunnel. They then begin walking to the opposite one.

*SIT tones are the BOO-BEE-BEEP you hear when you misdial a number, etc.

In case you didn't know that.

I hope you did, though.
